institution background

The Institute was started by a white missionary called Rev. Fr. Verona in the year 1952. It began with only two trainees in Carpentry and Joinery department with the purpose of facilitating church construction and repair work at that time.

In 1954, it was transformed into a Rural Trade School and Fr. Verona was then appointed as the Headmaster.

He solicited for funds with the help of the Busoga Government that built the first Carpentry and Joinery workshop, classroom, dining hall, and kitchen. Basing on the demand from the community, he introduced another training program in Tailoring.

In 1956, Fr. Slot introduced Building and Concrete Practice and Electrical Installation Programmes. In 1964, the Uganda Government took over the trade school and upgraded it to a technical School. In 1975, the Plumbing Section was established to offer plumbing as another additional program. In 1978, Iganga Technical School was elevated to the Technical Institute status and the Motor Vehicle section was established, but the Motor Vehicle program did not take off immediately.
